Why Butter Is Bad For You (Eating Too Much Is Dangerous)

Butter is a great food with many health benefits that contains high fat content, and eating too much of it can lead to unhealthy cholesterol levels, weight gain, and clogged arteries.

What is Butter Made of?

Butter is essentially the fat of milk. It is usually made from salted cream or acidulated soured cream.

Butter comprises of more than 80% milk fat, but also contains water in the form of tiny droplets, perhaps some milk SNF, with or without salt.

Milk fat, which is 98% triglycerides is a source of energy and nutrients, and an important food ingredient that provides desirable textural and flavor characteristics.

The fatty acid composition of butter typically contains:

  • 70% saturated fatty acids
  • 25% monounsaturated fatty acids
  • 5% polyunsaturated fatty acids

The high saturated fatty acid content in butter is likely to raise cholesterol levels and may have an effect on blood lipids.

Everybody Can Eat Butter?

Butter is usually something that comes to mind when you think of some delicious item on a restaurant menu. When you look at the many recipes that call for butter, it can be tempting to indulge in this type of food. It tastes great especially on toast or waffles. The flavor of butter is also used in many sauces such as a bearnaise sauce. It makes the dish more savory and flavorful.

Butter itself is not harmful. In fact, it is rich in MCT, particularly butyric acid which is anti-inflammatory, and reduces the bad cholesterol and triglycerides.

However, if you are following a diet or are trying to watch your cholesterol levels and lose weight then butter is not the best option for you.

Even though butter makes every food taste great others are also expressing their health concerns. Butter is not good for people with:

  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Heart disease
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Stomach Ulcer

You may have heard that butter is better than margarine. But the truth is that butter contains lots of unhealthy saturated fat and cholesterol, which can raise blood cholesterol levels.

Is butter associated with the increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease?.

Currently, no study formally answers this question.

A meta-analysis recently published in PLOS One even questions the hypothesis that butter has a harmful effect. It’s authors, who compiled nine observational studies carried out in 15 countries came to a conclusion—that eating butter is not associated with an increase in cardiovascular risk.

In addition to these neutral cardiovascular findings, the meta-analysis yielded the following:

  • Consuming butter is associated with a lower risk for diabetes.
  • Consuming butter is associated with a discrete but significant increase in overall mortality.

What does this mean?

The mainstream media quickly picked up on this study to extol the virtues of butter, claiming that this wrongly accused food is beneficial to our health.

Such restating of the findings of the PLOS One study is inappropriate and poses a risk to public health.

The meta-analysis included observational studies only, with all of the biases inherent in this type of study.

Furthermore, most of these studies involved healthy persons—not people at high cardiovascular risk.

Finally, in nutrition, eating more of one thing means eating less of another. The authors of the meta-analysis said, “People who eat butter probably eat fewer sweets and processed foods, such as refined processed grain products.”

Therefore, butter is perhaps better than certain processed foods, but it can’t be concluded that it is, in itself, a healthy food. Bear in mind that butter is the fat with the highest fatty acid content: 10g of butter contains 5g of saturated fat.

By comparison, 10g of olive oil contains 1.5g of saturated fat.

Reasons Why Butter Is Bad For You

Butter is seen as an unhealthy food by some consumers due to a number of reasons, and they include:

1. Allergic Reactions

People who are addicted to butter can have some allergies. But dairy allergy can also cause a reaction in other parts of your body including the skin and lungs. Swelling often in the lips and face.

2. Stomach Ulcer

Butter has some amount of trans fatty acids and our stomachs are sensitive to trans fats. Eating too much can trigger ulcer.

3. Dizziness

It is caused by increased blood flow to the stomach and intestines, which takes blood flow away from other parts of the body. As a result, the heart rate speeds up to pump more blood through the body and the blood vessels also tighten. Both factors can cause a person to feel dizzy after eating butter.

4. Acid Reflux

High consumption of butter can lead to severe reflux and vomiting. Butter invariably raises stomach acid levels increasing burning sensations in the gut.

Other reasons include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Bloating
  • Gas


The problem is not with butter, it is how much people consume, not considering the impact on human health and it’s side effects. Butter tends to be bad only if you don’t limit the intake. The most important thing is to share your health concerns with a doctor or nutritionist if you want to include butter in your diet.
